Red wine

Scientists from the University of Leicester have been studying the effects of a compound called resveratrol. This compound is found in red grapes and has many potential health benefits for humans such as helping to prevent cancer.

Scientists from the University made lab models to identify any benefits of taking a daily amount of resveratrol by drinking two glasses of wine. They found that the daily amount can reduce the rate of bowel tumours by around 50%.

The next step for the scientists is to study the compound further to understand any further in order to identify the amount of resveratrol which is most effective in humans.

Green tea

Green tea is made from the dried leaves of the Asian plant Camellia Sinensis. Many people in different parts of Asia regularly consume green tea. The rates of cancers are much lower in Asia than in other parts of the world with many people believing this is down to the high consumption of green tea.

There is however, no real evidence that green tea can help prevent cancer. It is often taken for other benefits such as:

–          Gets rid of the toxins in the body

–          Improves overall well being

Blueberry smoothie

Blueberries are often referred to as a super food. They contain a range of nutrients and chemicals which provide a variety of health benefits. It is thought that the combination of chemicals and nutrients found in blueberries may give them a protective effect against some diseases such as cancer.

There is no concrete evidence however, proving that blueberries directly reduce cancer risk. This is mainly due to the fact that our diets consist of many different foods, nutrients and chemicals.

Dark green smoothie

Dark greens such as spinach, lettuce and celery are all excellent sources of fibre which also contain Carotenoids. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) the Carotenoids found in spinach and lettuce may help to protect against cancers of the mouth, larynx and pharynx.

Researchers from the AICR believe this chemical helps prevent some cancers as it contains antioxidants.

Some laboratory research has found that the Carotenoids in dark greens can inhibit the growth of some types of breast cancer cells, lung cancer cells and stomach cancer cells. Therefore having dark greens in a smoothie can be very beneficial to your overall well being.
