Be honest: what springs to mind when you think about a cruising holiday?

Boring people sitting in deckchairs covered in a blanket?
Stuffy, formal dinner parties?

There are a whole heap of misconceptions about cruises nowadays, but they couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, going on a cruise probably isn’t as expensive – or boring! – as you think.

In recent years, the average age of the cruise-goer has decreased considerably, with cruise holidays now attracting a wide range of people of all ages and backgrounds.

So forget all you’ve been told about cruising – here are just some of the reasons why you should consider a cruise for your next holiday.

1. It’s cheaper than you think

Many people believe that going on a cruise will break the bank. But this isn’t always the case. Of course, a cruise holiday may seem expensive at first, but that’s because almost everything’s included in the price.

Once you’ve checked in, there’s little that you will need to pay for during your holiday – you’ll have a place to sleep, meals to eat, activities to enjoy, and different places to explore.

The only money you will need is if you want to purchase on-board drinks or spa treatments, or purchase souvenirs or meals when you stop at different ports.

Once you have itemised all of these costs, you’ll realise that a cruise provides you with more bang for your buck, and is a good value holiday.

2. There are loads of amenities on board
You probably know this one already. But do you realise just how much there is to do when on board a cruise?

Today’s modern cruises are equipped with a wide range of amenities, from swimming pools to spas, dining rooms to dancing halls, and everything in between. Expect spas, gyms, cinema rooms, libraries… you really will be spoiled for choice during your holiday.

There are plenty of things to do for all ages, so if you’re planning a holiday with children, grandchildren, or just your nearest and dearest, you can rest assured they will be well-entertained during the trip.

3. Travel to different countries – on the same holiday
What other holiday provides you with a chance to explore some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and intriguing cities – all on the same holiday?

In fact, you could experience different cultures and countries over a period of a few days. Depending on the type of cruise you book, you’ll be able to step off the boat and spend a few hours in a port-side city – soaking in the sun and purchasing a souvenir.

Some cruise lines have adapted their itineraries so that passengers can spend more than a few hours in popular locations – giving you more chance to explore the local area.

4. Ease of travel
Why think about cruising? Well, on a cruise, you get to see more of the places that you have always dreamed about. Unlike arriving at an airport, which can sometimes be hours away from the city centre, a cruise will drop you off in the middle of the action.

Cruise-liners are in a prime location when they stop in port-side cities and beach resorts – giving you more time to spend exploring the area.

5. You don’t have to do formal if you don’t want to
You might think a cruise holiday is similar to the movie Titanic – in which passengers will have to dress up in formal clothes during their stay.

However, this is another misconception. Yes, formality still occurs on some liners, but this isn’t as likely on a budget holiday or adventure cruise. There might still be an opportunity to dress up (if you want to), with some dining rooms requiring you to wear formal clothing for a particular meal, but there will be other places on the cruise to eat if you don’t want to do this.

The choice is completely yours…

6. Meet new people and make new friendships
As well as seeing the sights and spending time at sea, a cruise is a great way to meet new people – making it a popular holiday choice for those who are travelling alone.

With so many people on-board, you are sure to find someone with the same interests as you, or someone who might live in the next town to you. Many people have made long-lasting friendships on cruises, and have a lifetime of memories that they will never forget.
